Petition Calling for Elector Poll

A coalition of business groups including the Tasmanian Small Business Council, the Hobart Chamber of Commerce, the Confederation of Greater Hobart Businesses, and the Property Council of Australia has joined forces to push for an elector poll over the proposed Collins Street dual-bike lanes.

The option for an elector poll is now available, subject to a petition signed by 1,000 electors in the city of Hobart being presented to Council within 30 days of the public meeting held on March 25th.

The push comes after elected Councillors recently ignored the advice of Council officers for a compromise solution to the section of road between Harrington Street and Murray Street, instead redesigning the proposal on the run, including inserting a bus stop in the middle of the street.

Businesses in Collins St are unsurprisingly devastated at the potential loss of business and the value of their premises if the bike lanes proposal goes ahead.

Your support to sign the petition is very much appreciated.

Remember, your signature and vote is ONLY valid if you are an elector in the City of Hobart.

If you are a business owner or renter, who may live in another council area, you may complete an application (below) to join the General Managers Roll and become a registered voter. Yes, you may vote in two local government areas.

If you are not enrolled to vote in the HCC area, for you signature to be counted you may need to enrol to be on the General Manager’s (GM) roll.
To be on the roll you must be a:

• resident who is not on the State Electoral Roll (for instance non-Australian citizens)
• non-resident owner or occupier of property in the Hobart municipal area
• the nominee of a corporate body.

To register for the GM roll, you must fill out the form which applies to you:

If you are an occupier of a property in the Hobart municipal area you will need to provide a supporting document with your completed Electoral Enrolment Form, showing your name and current address. Examples are your drivers licence, a utility bill, lease agreement, letter from the landlord or other such document.
